Healing Holistic - A little girl’s journey with eczema

By Dr. Alina Olteanu, Whole Child Texas

Healing is rarely a quick fix. It’s more like tending a garden: you prepare the soil, plant the seeds, water them every day, and wait for the sun to do its quiet work. With patience, consistency, and love, the changes slowly blossom into something beautiful.

This month, I want to share the story of a 5-year-old girl who came to our clinic struggling with constant itching and eczema that had covered much of her little body. Her family had tried creams and ointments, but nothing seemed to last. She was restless, uncomfortable, and her parents were exhausted and discouraged.

Instead of rushing to suppress the symptoms, we decided to gently work on her body from the inside out. Together, her family and I made a few important changes:

·         Removed processed foods and filled her plate with colorful greens and fresh vegetables.

·         Added probiotics and omega-3s to calm her immune system.

·         For three months, she also took iron and vitamin D, since her labs showed anemia and low vitamin D levels.

·         Every evening, her mom massaged chamomile oil into her skin as a soothing moisturizer.

·         Parents also removed anything with artificial fragrances from their household products, following guidance from the Environmental Working Group website: https://www.ewg.org

The results weren’t instant — but week by week, her itching eased. Month by month, the red patches softened and faded. And after three months, her eczema had almost completely disappeared.

Her parents told me the most beautiful part wasn’t just seeing her skin heal. It was watching her laugh more freely, sleep more soundly, and play without stopping to scratch. Healing gave her back the simple joys of childhood.

This story reminds us: healing takes time. It asks for patience, consistency, and the courage to believe that small daily changes matter. But with love and persistence, children’s bodies often respond in the most remarkable ways.

Every child is different, and your child’s eczema may need a few other interventions. But I want parents to know this: healing your child is possible.
